Mu Sigma Day of Service

Our efforts can transform the communities we all live and work in, one day at a time. With this in mind, the Mu Sigma US team began the Mu Sigma Day of Service. Taking place over the course of 2 months across Seattle, San Francisco/Bay Area, Chicago, Detroit, Bentonville, Austin, Dallas, Denver, Atlanta, and New York, the Days of Service are aimed at giving back to the communities that have fostered us and nurtured our growth.

On May 4th, 7 members from the Mu Sigma Seattle team volunteered with the Washington Trails Association for trail maintenance of the Evans Creek Preserve. The Mu Sigma team helped fix drainage, repair erosion damage, install logs on the trail edge for retention, and replant vegetation to improve the trail.
On the 11th of May, young enthusiasts from the Mu Sigma Detroit team joined hands with the Gleaners Community Food Bank to help bag over 10,000 pounds of food that is estimated to feed nearly 9,000 people in Southeast Michigan.
In 2009, Arkansas ranked #1 in the nation in childhood hunger. We are still on the journey of improvement. On the 19th of May, the Bentonville Mu Sigma team volunteered at a local urban farm that donates produce to not-for -profits serving to fight child hunger in Arkansas.
On the 1st of June, the Mu Sigma team from New York and New Jersey spent the afternoon in Manhattan’s East River Park, getting their hands dirty to help the Lower East Side Ecology Center remove invasive species from the flower beds in the park. With only 1 full time employee to maintain the 57-acre park, the Lower East Side Ecology Center relies on volunteers to help maintain the beauty of the park. 14 Mu Sigmans from the Atlanta region volunteered with the Piedmont Park Conservancy Group to spread mulch and preserve the community garden. Piedmont Park is the largest urban park in the city of Atlanta spanning 189 acres and its maintenance is solely dependent on donations and volunteers. Mu Sigmans from the Bay Area came together to help the Second Harvest Food Bank package and sort food as part of their initiative to distributed nutritious food each week to low-income people in need in every zip code from Daly City to Gilroy, and from the ocean to the bay.
On the 6th of June, the Dallas Mu Sigma team came together to volunteer at Our Community Pantry of the North Texas Food Bank. Assisting patrons with shopping for groceries, checking out and moving food to their vehicles, making sure that shelves were properly stocked and organized, and helping peel vegetables, we helped feed 66 families that day!
On the 8th of June, the Denver Mu Sigma team volunteered at the Mission Homeless Shelter in Downtown Denver that assists people by providing social services, conducting religious services, and providing meals to members of the community. The team packed food into paper bags, then proceeded to heat lunch and serve it in trays to over 30 individuals and families, wrapping up a greatly rewarding experience.
On the 13th of June, the Mu Sigma Austin team went to the Central Texas Food Bank to help with the upkeep of their garden. The team went through the day interacting with the head of the garden, working and socializing with locals to remove weeds that would naturally steal nutrients from the main crop, and watering the plants as well as the crop.
On the 15th of June, the Mu Sigma Chicago team helped the Chicago Park District mulch trees in Seward Park located in the Near North Side community area which offers a mix of athletic programming and family special events. Providing an insulation layer for the tree roots during summer and winter months, we’ve helped maintain the health and beauty of the park.
The outcomes our employees have been able to accomplish through their volunteering efforts is something we are extremely proud of. Seeing the difference they have made, we have already begun putting efforts to continue this activity in the fall, in a bigger and more impactful way.
